Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) are one of the most common infections in humans. We can help strengthen your immune system against the bacteria and viruses that cause UTIs.

Boost your urinary health

Good urinary function is vital to your overall health and wellbeing. Problems with your urinary system can lead to bigger health implications if left unchecked and can also indicate issues with your other body systems.

A UTI can happen anywhere in your urinary tract, which is made up of your kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.

Most UTIs only involve the urethra and bladder, but more serious infections can involve the ureters and kidneys in the upper tract. Although these cases are rarer, they can also lead to more severe health problems.

How to protect your urinary health

If you treat a UTI when symptoms first start to appear, you can usually avoid any more serious health problems.

Symptoms include a burning sensation with urination, increased frequency of passing water or bloody, cloudy or darkened urine, which might also have a strong odour. Women may suffer pelvic pain, while men may suffer discomfort in their bottom.

UTIs which affect the kidneys can be more serious, especially if bacteria moves from the infected kidney into the blood, which could lead to fever, chills, sickness and abdominal pain.

You should see a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms, which, in most cases, can be treated with antibiotics.

How to prevent a UTI

Prevention is better than cure. By taking a few simple steps and lifestyle changes, you can help strengthen your urinary system to lower your risk of UTIs.

Keeping hydrated is key. Adults should drink between six and eight glasses of water a day. It also important not to hold urine for long periods.

If you have problems with incontinence or fully emptying your bladder, talk to your doctor. Diet is also important.

Foods and drinks high in antioxidants and with a slight acidic taste, including cranberries, blueberries, oranges, dark chocolate, unsweetened probiotic yogurt, tomatoes, broccoli and spinach, can help. Drink decaf coffee, cranberry, blueberry, or pomegranate juices; and black and green tea. Supplements may be a smart proactive measure.
